STABILIZATION (Why is stability important when weight lifting?)

This is a topic I always bring up right away with my clients — stabilization in the core, glutes and in your breathing. When performing weight lifting exercises, cardiovascular endurance, stretching or any other daily activity — stabilization is extremely important. This aspect of your body ensures you have proper posture, you are in an injury preventative state and your body is in the correct placement to perform movements without injury.

How do I know if I am in a stabilized position? Great question, let me tell you. When your body is in a stabilized position, it means there are 3 aspects that are turned on (ALWAYS!)

  1. Core Engagement
  2. Glute Engagement
  3. Consistent in and outflow of breath

When your body has adapted to the adjustment of these three aspects, other parts of your training begin to fall in line — you may not feel pain where you did before, you will be more balanced, you will feel stronger (and be stronger as a result), you will be mindful of your movements and how to remain in an injury preventative state, you will be able to lift more weight without pain or discomfort…

How do I turn on my core, glutes and breathing? When working with me as a coach, I break down each of these components at the beginning of your training and work to make you a master at each of these as you work through your exercise, stretching and daily life. My mentality is, if you are great at the basics, you will move into each new exercise and movement that much quicker and with greater efficiency, PLUS have a much lower percentage of probable injury.
